Visiting the Museum

The Sheridan County Museum is a great resource for helping your students to become more aware of their local history.  Through the use of dioramas, maps, photographs and artifacts, your students will have the opportunity to explore Sheridan area history and make connections between the past and the present.

Meeting Standards: All of the education programs offered by the Sheridan County Museum can help your class meet a number of state and local benchmarks and standards.  In addition, the programs offered at the Museum can be specifically designed to fit with your lessons plans and the topics that you will have covered prior to your visit.    Field Trips

Special Projects

Do you have an idea for a special history project but you're not sure what to do next or how to put it together?  We are eager to help you bring your ideas to life and help put together fun projects that bring your students closer to their local history.

Past Projects

Activity Books: In 2007, 3rd grade students from Tongue River Elementary School in Ranchester created a coloring and activity book based on local history.  The students worked with their teachers and the Curator of Museum Education to pick the topics, write the text, and create unique activities for each letter of the alphabet.  Their final project, the Sheridan County History ABC Coloring & Activity Book, was printed and is available for purchase at the Museum Mercantile and local bookstores.

TRE History Luncheon

Oral Histories: Area students had the opportunity to plan a history luncheon on the Museum’s porch where they were given the opportunity to talk with people that lived and worked in some of the nearby mining towns such as Monarch, Acme, Kleenburn, and Dietz.

The resulting experience was an amazing opportunity for these two generations to learn from one another.

Exploring History Program

The Exploring History trunk program is a part of the Museum’s education outreach services.  The program is designed to serve as an additional resource to help local educators bring history into the classroom and helps to create a unique and challenging learning environment that enhances a traditional classroom experience.

The first of several trunks to be developed as part of the trunk program is Black Diamonds: Exploring Sheridan County’s Coal Mining Communities.  This trunk contains hands-on historical objects, audiovisual materials, books, activities, and an educator’s guide.

The program is available year-round and there are no fees to borrow the trunk.  The trunk can be checked out for a period of one week but must be reserved at least two weeks in advance.  For more details on the Museum’s Exploring History trunk program or to reserve the trunk, contact the Curator of Museum Education.
